Part one of a ten part series: My favorite emerging photographers list their favorite emerging photographers.

Christina McNeill loves people, and particularly loves peculiar people. It’s no surprise that she leaned heavily on portrait photographers in her picks, or that she selected artists who share the joy she finds in life’s absurdities.

Ana Borquez

“Watch out Cindy Sherman lovers, feast your eyes on Ana Borquez. Ana is a self-portrait powerhouse chameleon. Her creativity is definitely apparent in her work and she is non-stop! She’s the girl who you’ll find in the taxidermy stores purchasing pig skulls, sharks in a jar, and owl pellets. She’s the girl that purchased a body bag on the internet and was excited to shoot the toe-tag! She’s also opening up a fine-art gallery in San Miguel de Allende Mexico, so keep an eye on her—she’s worth noticing!” -CM

Jay Watson

“Jay is an amazing photographer, an amazing person, and an amazing instructor. I had the privilege of having two classes with Mr. Watson at the Academy of of Art University—and boy did he push me. He was the second person (other than my high school photography teacher) to actually believe in me. And, through that he has definitely had a helping hand in molding who I am as a photographer today. He’s got talent, charisma, know-how, and is on top!” -CM

Cass Bird

“I don’t know Cass Bird—but I want to know Cass Bird. Amazing photographer, amazing eye and totally where I want to see my career going. Very, very inspiring and with a name like Cass Bird, what else could you ask for?” -CM

Leo Patrone

“I randomly found his blog on the net and immediately fell in love. His work is soft, comforting and—he’s a film *geek* like myself. Perfect pair! ” -CM

Lisa Wiseman

“Lisa has got an incredible eye—such a fine touch to a fine art-style of photography. Her work makes me feel good, and you can’t ask for more then that!” -CM

Henry Dombey

“I can’t get enough of people who are still shooting film and leave their digital cameras at home to collect dust! Henry’s work is reminiscent of work I would see in my history of photography classes; documenting real people everyday. He’s got style, talent and is some one to definitely keep an eye on!” -CM

Erik Almas

“If there were a living photography god, his name would be Erik Almas. Erik’s work is outstanding; his use of models, lighting, composition, and location make his work stand out among other fashion photographers competing with him. His style is so profound that blending in with others will never be an issue for him. In my utopian-goddess world, I’d be assisting for him!” -CM

Mathew Scott

“I feel very fortunate to have studied with Mathew Scott at the Academy of Art University. He, too, is a film lover and has an eye like no other. He’s attracted to real people with amazing talents, personalities, and attitude. His work is soft, calm, *real* and makes you want to know more about his subjects. He just moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles, so watch out for this one—he’ll definitely be on top. ” -CM

Mona Brooks

“Mona, Mona—where do I start? If you want to be inspired, go hang out with Mona for a day. She is a jaw-dropping firecracker who gets the job done well. She’s got passion, drive, charisma, smarts, talent, and is going after her dreams. She’s the girl who will befriend Mr. Obama, she’s the girl who will be shooting for the New York Times, she’s the girl who will be a White House staff photographer, she’s the girl who everyone should know.” -CM

Joel Aron

“I had the pleasure to meet Joel through the oh-so-lovely JPG Magazine. He’s not only a wonderful photographer, he’s a really good person and someone who you’d love to be around. Want to talk geeky shop? Then Joel is your go-to man. Want to know anything and everything about film, cameras, post production, then Joel is your man. Want to be inspired by his amazing published work, then watch out for this super talented man. His work will captivate you and catch you by surprise! ” -CM
